Course Content

Urban spaces in the Ottoman Empire from the end of the ?Classical Age? to the Second Constitutional Era (1908) through historical. social. and theoretical viewpoints; critical engagement with primary sources such as court records and waqf (endowment) documents alongside secondary literature; exploration of organization and reproduction of urban spaces; legal. economic. and social structures of urban life and governance; relationship between the state and urban communities; coexistence and segregation in multi-ethnic and multi-religious urban areas; the role of property and property regimes; public and private spaces over time; scholarly debates and different perspectives of Ottoman urban life.
