This is the first part of the two-semester required course in the METU Department of History. It regards the transition from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Turkey as part of an underlying process of transformation in the nineteenth century. namely modernization. Therefore. the first semester surveys this background by establishing necessary connection points to the Republican era. After providing an overall framework. the course will discuss the Tanzimat period. the Hamidian rule and the Second Constitutional era by highlighting certain issues in each term. The ultimate. aim of the course is providing a picture of the epoch of modern reform and westernization in the Ottoman Empire and charting out categories of transformation in order to tie this process to the passage from empire to the nation-sate.
