Course Content
The course intends to outline administrative structure of the Ottoman Empire and concentrates on the Tanzimat Reforms, the intellectual discussions of the time; the Ottomanism, Islamism and Turkism. The collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the establishment of the nation states in the place of the Ottoman Empire are discussed. The double revolution; the National Liberation Movement of 1919-1923 and the establishment of republican regime, the Izmir economic Congress and the following economic policies of the republican regime are looked through. Intellectuals of the time, such as Ziya Gökalp, Yusuf Akçura, Ahmet Aðaoðlu, Ahmet Hamdi Baþar and the Kadro Movement, and their arguments regarding economic development policies as well as nationalism, are included among the topics. As to the foreign policy of the republican regime, the territorial settlements of the period from 1919 to 1923, the Mosul Question, the straits Question, the foreign policy approach of the republican regime, with particular references to the Balkan Pact of 1934 and the Sadabad Pact of 1937, are examined.
