Course Content

Fundamental Stellar Properties: distance, luminosity, temperature, radius, spectra, surface gravit,orbital speed, age, time-scales, space velocities, mass, rotation, absorption; basic observational methods; the Sun. Stellar Structures and Evolution: hydrostatic equilibrium, energy transport in stars, stellar interiors, hydrogen fusion, mass range of stars, leaving the main sequence; interstellar medium; star formation; origin of planetary systems; planet earth; exoplanets. Galaxies: Milky Way; other galaxies; agns; quasars; large-scale structure; galaxy formation.
