Course Content

The main objective of this course is to examine contemporary Afghanistan in terms of its society and the state within a historical framework. Designed with a focus on the sociology of Afghanistan, the course will be dealing with tribal/ethnic identities; tribe and state relations; the social and political force of Islam; and the impact of modern ideologies including nationalism, socialism and political Islam. All these issues will be addressed in a larger framework that covers the modern state-building processes as well as foreign interventions.
