Course Content

This course will examine the history of language policy in Russia from the late 19th century to the present day. Major focus will be placed on the development of language policy and the role of the Russian language in the Soviet Union from the Russian Revolution to the collapse of the Soviet Union. In addition, this course will deal with the development of national language policies in the former Soviet republics after they gained independence up to the present day. Legislation concerning language policy in the government, media, and education is examined for each of these republics. The most recent demographic data, the latest proposed or passed legislation and/or policy directives in the former Soviet states, and the measures that Russian government has taken to promote the Russian language to predict future survival and role of Russian in each of the former republics of the Soviet Union will also be examined.
