The course aims to introduce the study of language contact and its outcomes. as well as the social and linguaistic factors that regulate contact-induced change. The course covers concepts in language contact including bilingualism. code-switching and lexical borrowing. language change. contact and grammaticalization. language shift. language attrition. language death. pidgins and creoles formation.
