Course Content

This course examines the Iyrics of Neil Peart, drummer and primary Iyricist of the rock band Rush, as a serious body of literary and philosophical work, as works of literary and philosophical expression. Through Close reading and listening, students analyze themes such as individualism, technology, memory, fear, and mythology. Particular attention Will be given to the songwriting of Iyricist Neil Peart and the ways in which popular music can function as a vehicle for Ýntellectual and cultural commentary. This course also traces the evolution of Peart`s Iyrical themes from 1975 to 2012. The course Will analyze the transition from highconcept fantasy and Ayn Rand-influenced individualism to a mature, ` sociological ` exploration of memory, mortality, and the humarý condition. Students Will engage with song Iyrics as texts, explore their literary influences, and consider their cultural and historical contexts. Musical context Will be discussed insofar as it informs Iyrical meaning, but the rima focus is on language, ideas, and worldview.
