Course Content

Introduction to sub-disciplines of Linguistics; basic concepts in morphology (the lexicon, free and bound morphemes, inflection vs. derivation, morphological typology of languages, morphological analysis, hierarchical structure of words, morphology-phonology interface); basic concepts in syntax (strucural relations: dominance, motherhood, daughterhood, sisterhood; phrase structure: head, complement, adjunct; x-bar schema; complements vs. adjuncts; syntactic typology of languages); basic concepts in sentential semantics (compositionality, truth conditions, paraphrase, entailment, contradiction, presupposition).
