Course Content

Introduction to components of language as a cognitive system (nature, structure, and usage of language); basic concepts of linguistic competence and acquisition; phonetics (articulatory, acoustic, auditory; articulation of consonants and vowels; International Phonetic Alphabet); language and the brain (lateralization, autonomy, critical age); language evolution; semantics (lexical and phrasal semantics; compositionality; truth conditions, paraphrase, entailment, contradiction, presupposition); pragmatics (linguistic and situational context, speech acts, maxims of conversation).
