Course Content
Despite the issues associated with it democratically, the Russian Federation is a participant in the human rights protection system in Europe. The challenges formed by this fact alone appear to test, not only Russia, a federal, multi-ethic and territorially colossal edifice in painful transition, but also the very European system under a regional inter-governmental organisation, the Council of Europe. How is Russia coping? How does the European system manage to keep Russia within its orbit? This is a legal course in international human rights law that centres on actual cases in the system involving Russia. What are the typical grievances in practice? How are those grievances possibly remedied? The course seeks to rehearse answers to those and other questions through a close scrutiny of the actual case files evaluated and ruled by the European Court of Human rights, the central monitoring organ of the European human rights system.
