Course Content
The course provides students with a broad introduction to China`s political, economic, and strategic development during the modern era. The discussion begins with a general introduction of Chinese pre-modern and modern history as the roots of contemporary developments and ends with China`s contemporary rise and implications for the world. The course also touches upon the ways in which China is rising such as economy and societal change. The course is divided into four parts. Part I introduces the imperial and republican history of China. This part provides historical background for analyses of domestic and foreign policies in the People`s Republic of China. Part II examines China`s traditional economy and economic reform and openness since 1978. Part III discusses major issues in contemporary Chinese society. Part IV examines China`s foreign relations. Finally, the course discusses China`s peaceful rise and the U. S response to it.
