Course Content
This course examines nationalism as a major force in the making and transformation of modern
international politics. It introduces key concepts and theories of nations and nationalism, and traces the historical relationship between nationalism, sovereignty, empire, global hierarchy, self determination, recognition, revisionism, decolonization, postcolonial state-building, globalization, and contemporary populist and civilizationalist politics. The course pays particular attention to the changing meanings and political uses of nationalism across different historical periods, from the nineteenth century to the post-Cold War and twenty-first-century contexts.
