Course Content
This course examined the political economy of rural development from ancient agricultural civilizations to the emergence of capitalism; from transition to neoliberalism to future of rural development. It explores how land. labor. ecology. markers and state power shape rural across historical periods and global regions. After covering a large range of topics. we will analyze long-term historical continuities and ruptures in rural development from ancient agriculture to the contemporary period. We will evaluate global variations in evolution of rural dynamics comparing cases from Europe. Latin America. Asia. North America and the Middle East. We will also critically compare theoretical frameworks including Marx's primitive accumulation. Chayanov's peasant rationality. and ecological critiques such as Rachel Carson's Silent Spring. The course ultimately asks: what form of justice. sustainability and human flourishing remain ossible in rural futures?
