Course Content
Rural areas have undergone significant transformations and change. They are not simply defined by primary production or dependent on urban areas. Instead. they are characterised by economic differentiation. pressures to compete in a globalised economy and often represent critical spaces for planning intervention (addressing planetary challenges such as climate change) and conflict (for example through mediating priorities between economic development. environmental conservation. tourism pressures and housing demand). This introductory course aims to: (1) inform students of contemporary rural economic. social and cultural issues based on academic literatüre and empirical research; (2) inform students on international policies and planning issues specific to rural areas; and (3) describe the variety of practices and conflicts that arise in the areas of rural planning and development. The course will discuss these issues in international contexts. both in Europe and in Asia.
By the end of the course. students will be able to: (1) assess critically the contemporary policies. institutions and mechanisms of rural planning and rural development; (2) analyse rural planning and development conflicts from geographical and sociological perspectives; (3) compare and contrast rural planning and rural development issues internationally; and (4) explain the economic. social and cultural context within which rural policies are framed.
