CRP442 ENVIRONMENTAL GOVERNANCE, MANAGEMENT AND POLICY TOOLS
Course Content
Environmental challenges in the Anthropocene, including climate change, pollution, resource depletion, and ecosystem degradation have become central concerns for urban areas. Addressing these challenges requires an integrated understanding of environmental governance, policy and management approaches operating across global, national and local scales. To develop this understanding, the course introduces key concepts, instruments, methods, and tools used in environmental decision-making to analyse, assess and address environmental challenges in urban areas. Each class combines lectures with practical sessions in which students actively engage with real-world urban environmental challenges through discussions, case study analysis, problem-solving exercises and workshops.
By the end of the course, students will be able to: (1) analyse environmental problems in urban development contexts and identify potential governance, policy and management responses; (2) explain how global and regional environmental governance frameworks shape responses to contemporary environmental challenges in urban areas; (3) explain environmental policy implementation processes and the economic dimensions of environmental decision-making; (4) understand the role of environmental assessments (including SEAs and EIAs) and environmental valuation approaches used in urban contexts; and (5) understand the functions of environmental management, monitoring, risk assessment and scenario development methods and tools.
