Course Content
The course introduces students to collecting or using visual materials (i.e. photography and film) and to reading-analyzing visual materials as part of ethnographic research. It presents various approaches and methodologies through which visual materials are interpreted and analyzed, e.g. semiology, psychoanalysis, and reception theory. It attempts to uncover cultural meanings that are produced in and through visual materials such as tattoos, sculptures, reliefs, cave paintings, jewelry, hieroglyphics, paintings, and photographs.
